Assistant Attorney General

Child Protection Section - Full-Time; Palmer Office

The State of Alaska, Department of Law is recruiting for an attorney to serve in the Child Protection section of the Civil Division.

The Child Protection section in the Palmer Attorney Generalís Office is recruiting for a full-time attorney. The primary responsibility of the attorney in this position is to handle child-in-need-of-aid cases in Palmer and surrounding areas. The case load is heavy and litigation focused. Frequent appearances in Superior Court and extensive trial work are required. The position requires a significant amount of written motion practice and preparation of court orders. Opportunity to work on child welfare policy and participate in special projects aimed at improving the child welfare system in Alaska may be available. Some travel within Alaska will be necessary.

Attorneys in this section must produce a high volume of work on a daily basis. At least two years trial experience and experience in child abuse or neglect law is highly desired. General criminal and family law experience will also be considered. Candidates must have strong litigation and case management skills as well as strong time management skills. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate effective and appropriate consensus building as well as the willingness and ability to be flexible. The attorney in this position must be a creative thinker, be able to think on his or her feet, be able to work independently and work well under frequent pressure. The successful candidate will be committed to the child welfare field and be able to work with a variety of people, including the client agency, the general public and witnesses.

Salary will depend upon the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. A comprehensive state benefits package is provided for regular, full-time, partially-exempt (PX) positions. State attorneys are in the partially-exempt service and serve at-will at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
