Consumer Protection Litigation Assistant (Associate Attorney I)

Special Litigation Section - Full-Time; Anchorage

Job description

The Department of Law, Civil Division, Anchorage, is recruiting for the position of Litigation Assistant (Associate Attorney I) to assist consumer protection attorneys in the Special Litigation Section. This is a full-time advanced paralegal position for an applicant with demonstrated organizational, writing, and analytical skills, and experience in database management and investigations.

The person selected for this position will be responsible for handling the intake of consumer complaints filed with the department and the department's informal mediation of such complaints. This process involves coding and previewing over 300 to 400 complaints a year, identifying issues for attorney review, drafting letters to businesses that are the subject of complaints, following up on businesses’ responses, and responding to consumer questions.

The person selected will also assist consumer protection attorneys with investigations and litigation of unfair trade practices complaints, including interviewing witnesses, collecting, reviewing, and organizing documents, management and review of discovery, trial preparation, and management of exhibits and witnesses. In addition, there will be opportunities to provide litigation support to attorneys working on other special litigation cases.

In addition, the person in this position will oversee and assist in maintaining the complaint database from which the department tracks the number and type of complaints received and their disposition, and provide reports from that database summarizing complaint data for budget and other purposes.

Qualifications

Strong organizational, analytical, writing, and computer skills are necessary as well as an ability to manage multiple complex tasks or projects with minimal supervision. Having paralegal, investigation, and data base management experience is desirable but not required. This position is a non-attorney position assigned to the partially exempt service. Beginning salary is $4,662/month DOE and includes a full-time benefit package.
