Torts and Workers' Compensation Section - Full-Time; Anchorage Office
The Torts and Workers’ Compensation section of the Department of Law is looking for a talented and hard-working attorney who wants to become a member of our active workers’ compensation legal team in Anchorage. The Civil Division of the Department of Law is the State of Alaska’s chief legal office in civil matters. The Department of Law is comprised of 13 different sections throughout the state and is considered the “largest law firm” in Alaska.
The Torts and Workers’ Compensation section primarily handles torts and workers’ compensation litigation on behalf of the State of Alaska in judicial and administrative forums. The workers’ compensation group in the section represents the state as an employer before the Alaska Workers' Compensation Board and the Alaska Workers' Compensation Appeals Commission. The group also provides advice and training to state agencies on workers’ compensation matters as well as playing a role in analyzing legislation impacting the practice area. The torts group provides legal defense and advice in tort lawsuits filed against state agencies and state employees, including personal injury, wrongful death, professional malpractice, property damage, and civil rights claims. The section consists of 15 attorneys, 4 of whom comprise the workers’ compensation group in Anchorage; the 11 attorneys in the torts group work in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks.

There are 250 miles of trail inside the city to explore—many just minutes from downtown and spectacular mountains and glaciers nearby for hiking, biking, running, and skiing. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, an 11 mile coastal trail that begins in downtown Anchorage, begins only blocks from the Department of Law. Anchorage is also home to Alaska’s largest university and enjoys multiple performing arts centers, extensive shopping and nightlife; and a growing culinary scene to enjoy. Attorneys assigned to the Workers’ Compensation workgroup will represent the state as an employer in workers’ compensation cases brought by state employees. This requires routinely handling litigation in administrative proceedings before the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Board, including discovery, motion practice, and hearings, as well as appellate matters before the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Appeals Commission and the Alaska Supreme Court. The attorney will also provide legal counsel to state agency employers, the state’s Division of Risk Management, and the state’s independent adjusters on workers’ compensation issues, and may advise on proposed legislation. Travel both in Alaska and out of state may be required.
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and have a strong knowledge of general legal principles and practices. Qualified applicants must have excellent communication, oral advocacy, writing, and time management skills, and good judgment. The ability to handle a high volume of cases in a fast-paced work environment is essential. Administrative law experience, including a background in workers’ compensation law, is preferred, but not required. Litigation experience in any forum is also preferred.
Applicants should be highly motivated and able to work as a member of a team with minimum supervision. They should feel comfortable directly advising clients, and should expect to:
- Analyze and make recommendations on legal and factual questions;
- Research and analyze medical issues;
- Assess and manage cases and claims;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with public agencies, clients, opposing counsel, and unrepresented litigants.

Salary will depend upon the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. The State provides a comprehensive state benefits package to regular, full-time, partially-exempt (PX) positions. State attorneys are in the partially-exempt service and serve at will, at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
