Assistant Attorney General
Natural Resources Section - Full-Time; Anchorage

The Natural Resources Section provides legal support to natural resource management programs that support Alaska’s economy, recreation, and culture. Section attorneys provide daily legal advice about agency programs and operations, draft regulations and legislation, and litigate in administrative, state, and federal forums. The section seeks an experienced attorney to advise the Department of Natural Resources in operational matters and litigation. The attorney hired for this position will advise DNR on issues relating to development and management of state resources, including public domain land, trust land, state parks, land conveyances and contracts, public access, state and federal land management plans, ANCSA, ANILCA, and NEPA. The selected candidate also may work on matters concerning other issues within the section’s area of responsibility. Some travel may be necessary.
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and have a strong knowledge of general legal principles and practices. Qualified applicants must have strong communication, oral advocacy, writing, and time management skills, and demonstrate excellent professional judgment. The ability to handle a high volume of work, cooperatively prioritize work with several clients, and develop and maintain strong working relationships is essential. At least three years of experience in natural resources issues and transactions—including state and federal litigation or administrative proceedings—is strongly preferred. Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills, good organizational skills, and an interest in working on complex matters. Applicants should be highly motivated and able to work individually and as a member of a team with minimum supervision.

Salary will depend upon the legal background and experience of the selected candidate. The State provides a comprehensive state benefits package to regular, full-time, partially-exempt (PX) positions. State attorneys are in the partially-exempt service and serve at will, at the pleasure of the Attorney General.
