Anchorage Man Indicted for Attempted Murder
February 16, 2017
(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) On February 15, 2017, 27 year old Armando Walker was indicted for attempting to murder a woman in an Anchorage grocery store and then attempting to murder a responding Anchorage Police Officer on February 8, 2017. The grand jury indicted Walker on two counts of attempted murder in the first degree and two counts of assault in the first degree.
Just after midnight February 8, 2017, Anchorage Police Department responded to a 911 call from the Carrs store on Northern Lights and Muldoon. A Carrs employee reported an altercation between a man and a woman in the store. Anchorage Police Officers responded and contacted Walker outside of the store. Walker attempted to flee from the area but the officers stopped him. Walker stabbed one of the officers as they attempted to detain him. During the subsequent investigation, officers determined that the woman had also been stabbed during the altercation in the store. The officer and the woman were treated for their stab wounds and have made a full recovery.
If convicted at trial, Walker faces a sentence of up to 99 years in prison for the attempted murder charges. A defendant’s sentence is determined by the judge who must consider the circumstances of the offense, the impact on the victims and the community, and the potential for rehabilitation of the defendant. The charges in the indictment are only allegations and are not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Walker is in the custody of the Department of Corrections. He is being held on bail requiring a $100,000 cash appearance bond, a $100,000 cash performance bond and a court-approved third party custodian. Walker is expected to be arraigned in Superior Court in Anchorage at 10:00 a.m. on February 17, 2017.
