Press Release

Indictment Returned for May 2017 Seward Highway Collision

July 6, 2017

(Anchorage, Alaska) Today, 29 year old Gary Jones was indicted for his alleged role in a head-on collision that caused serious physical injuries to three other people. Jones was also seriously injured in the collision. The grand jury indicted Jones on three counts of assault in the first degree. Jones is also charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving.

On May 27, 2017, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the Anchorage Police Department responded to a head-on collision at mile 76 of the Seward Highway. The investigation by the Anchorage Police Department’s Major Traffic Collision Unit revealed that Jones was driving a black BMW northbound at a high rate of speed when it attempted to pass another northbound vehicle. Jones’s BMW struck a Ford Ranger, seriously injuring its passengers. Jones and his passenger Cory Blankenship were also seriously injured in the collision. Jones is believed to have been impaired at the time of the crash. All four people were hospitalized.

If convicted of assault in the first degree, Jones faces up to 20 years in prison. A defendant’s sentence is determined by the judge who must consider the circumstances of the offense, the impact on the victim and the community, and the potential for rehabilitation of the defendant. The charges in the indictment are only allegations and are not evidence of guilt. Jones is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Jones is on third party custodian with bail at $500 cash-performance, plus a $2,500 cash-corporate appearance bond. Jones is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court on July 10, 2017.
