Brian Smith indicted for murder of second victim
October 17, 2019
(Anchorage, AK) – An Anchorage grand jury today indicted Brian Smith, who was previously indicted for the murder of a woman at a midtown hotel, for the murder of a second unrelated victim. The two alleged incidents occurred over a year apart.
Following the arrest of Smith for the murder of the first victim, the Anchorage Police Department conducted an interview. During the interview, Smith admitted to shooting another female victim between 2017 and 2018. According to the police officers, he provided the location of her body. Earlier this year, Alaska State Troopers recovered a skull with a gunshot wound from an area near the location identified by Smith. Ultimately, the second victim was able to be positively identified.
The grand jury today indicted Smith on the additional charges involving the murder of the second victim.
As is our normal practice, the victims’ names are not identified in the court documents out of respect for the victims and their families.
Smith remains in jail. His bail has been set at $250,000 cash performance and $500,000 cash appearance. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate these events. The charges against Mr. Smith are allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted at trial, and found to have subjected the first victim to substantial torture, the defendant will be sentenced to a mandatory 99 years of imprisonment.
Based upon these additional charges, the State is seeking an increase in bail. Bail will not be addressed until the arraignment on Monday, October 21st.
