New Stuyahok Man Indicted for Murder and Sexual Assault
September 18, 2020
(Anchorage, AK) – Today, an Anchorage grand jury indicted 20-year-old James Weedman for the murder of Angelina Chunak in New Stuyahok. Weedman was indicted on one count of murder in the first degree, three counts of murder in the second degree, two counts of sexual assault in the first degree, and two counts of tampering with physical evidence.
Chunak was found face down in a pond in New Stuyahok on August 9, 2020. The investigation was conducted by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation, the investigative arm of the Alaska State Troopers. New Stuyahok is a small community in Bristol Bay, which is served by the Dillingham District Attorney’s Office.
If convicted at trial, Weedman faces a sentence of up to 99 years imprisonment for each of the murder and sexual assault charges, and up to five years for each of the tampering with physical evidence charges.
A grand jury indictment is only an allegation and not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Weedman is in custody on $500,000 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned before the Superior Court in Dillingham on October 5, 2020.
