April 27, 2021
(Bethel, AK) – Earlier this month, a Bethel grand jury indicted 22-year-old Justin Roberts on one count of Sexual Assault in the First Degree along with one count each of Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and Assault in the Third Degree. The indictment is based on an incident that took place in August 2019 in which Mr. Roberts is alleged to have attacked a woman, dragged her to a steam house, strangled and sexually assaulted her. Law enforcement identified Mr. Roberts as a suspect through testing of a DNA sample collected from him following a 2020 conviction, which matched with DNA collected during the 2019 sexual assault investigation
If convicted at trial, Mr. Roberts faces a sentence of up to 99-years of imprisonment for the Sexual Assault charge, up to 20 years’ imprisonment for the Assault in the First Degree charge, up to 10 years’ imprisonment for the Assault in the Second Degree charge, and up to five years’ imprisonment for the Assault in the Third Degree charge.
These charges are only allegations and are not evidence of guilt. Defendants are presumed innocent and are entitled to a fair trial at which the prosecution must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
