Job description
The Labor & State Affairs Section is recruiting for a full-time attorney. The section provides legal advice and representation to state agencies in multiple areas of law, including elections, campaign finance, employment, labor relations, civil rights, separation of powers, boards and commissions, procurement, unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation, and workplace safety. The section’s client agencies are the Departments of Administration, Labor and Workforce Development, Military and Veterans Affairs; and to the Offices of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Division of Elections, Division of Motor Vehicles, Alaska Public Offices Commission, and the Alaska State Commission on Human Rights.
The attorney selected for this position will primarily advise and represent the Department of Labor and the Department of Administration on labor and employment matters. The work will be evenly split between litigation and agency advice. It can involve all aspects of agency representation, including administrative hearings and appeals, trials, mediation, legislation, regulations, public records, open meetings, and policy considerations. This attorney will have a high degree of autonomy in a collaborative and growing section and may also contribute to the other agencies and areas of law that the section handles.

Qualifications
Prior professional or legal experience, including a clerkship with the state or federal courts, is preferred but is not required. Applicants must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision, have excellent judgment and strong client relation skills, and need to be able to manage competing deadlines at once. Applicants should enjoy being part of a team environment and be comfortable with and interested in handling all phases of administrative litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and appeals. The successful applicant must possess superior analytical skills and excellent writing ability and be willing to draft, edit, and testify on legislation.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
