Section: Opinions, Appeals & Ethics
Location: Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, or Palmer
Job Number: 24-OAE-01
Closing Date: 6/5/24
Job description
The attorney selected for this position will do the full range of work handled by the Opinions, Appeals & Ethics Section. The section’s attorneys litigate some of the State’s most high-profile and complex cases in both the Alaska Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeal. Attorneys in the section represent the Office of Children’s Services in all child welfare appeals, including appeals involving the Indian Child Welfare Act. They assist with critical motion practice and strategic decision-making at the trial court level and often partner with special litigation attorneys on expedited, elections, and other complex cases. To help maintain the quality of the Department’s appellate practice, the section’s attorneys review all briefs filed in the Alaska Supreme Court and federal courts of appeals and stage moot courts for oral arguments. Attorneys from the section are often tasked with complex research projects, providing internal advice to state agencies, coordinating the state’s work on amicus curiae briefs, and drafting published Attorney General Opinions on matters of great public significance.
Attorneys in the Civil Division work on matters of statewide importance, all while living and enjoying all Alaska has to offer. If you enjoy complex and impactful legal work along with dramatic scenery, outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, kayaking, and abundant wildlife, then the Alaska Department of Law, Civil Division is the place for you. Flexible schedules, including hybrid telework arrangements, may be available.
