Job description
The Commercial, Fair Business, & Child Support Section is hiring for a generalist agency attorney that will allow a qualified candidate to use and enhance their legal skills while serving the Civil Division’s core mission – protecting the health and welfare of Alaskans.
The section serves Alaskans by representing and advising state agencies that impact their day-to-day lives. Section clients include the Division of Insurance, the Division of Occupational Licensing, the Professional Teaching Practices Commission, and other agency clients. Work assignments for attorneys seeking to join the section will be dependent upon an applicant’s experience and areas of particular interest.
Attorneys in the Civil Division work on matters of statewide importance, all while living and enjoying all Alaska has to offer. If you enjoy complex and impactful legal work along with dramatic scenery, outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, kayaking, and abundant wildlife, then the Alaska Department of Law, Civil Division is the place for you. Flexible schedules, including hybrid telework arrangements, may be available.
Qualifications
Prior professional or legal experience, including a clerkship with the state or federal courts, is preferred. Applicants should possess excellent judgment, excel at developing and nurturing strong working relationships, have strong writing skills, and must be capable of taking initiative and working well independently. The successful applicant will be willing to represent agency clients by giving informal advice as well as representing clients in administrative hearings, civil litigation, and appeals.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
