First Time Offender Sentenced to Eight Years for Domestic Violence Assault
December 12, 2013
On December 12, 2013, 43-year-old Anchorage resident Kosmos Harrison was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Philip Volland for a felony domestic violence assault. Harrison was convicted in August for assaulting the mother of his child in the presence of the child. Harrison was sentenced to eight years in prison with six years suspended. He will also be placed on probation for five years on probation. Harrison’s sentence is significant because he this was his first conviction and he faced a presumptive sentence of one to three years.
Superior Court Judge Phillip Volland sentenced Harrison. Judge Volland rejected Harrison’s contention that he did not cause the victim’s injuries. Judge Volland noted that the jury found two aggravating factors and found that Harrison’s crime was an “extremely serious domestic assault very poorly reflecting on Mr. Harrison’s character.” Judge Volland described Harrison as “manipulative, dominating, controlling, impulsive and unpredictable.”
