August 30, 2017
(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) Today, Superior Court Judge Kevin Saxby sentenced 54 year old Paul Miller to serve 50 years in prison for murdering Eduardo Escalante on August 12, 2014 at an assisted living facility in Anchorage. Miller pled guilty to murder in the second degree and agreed to the 50 year sentence.
On August 12, 2014, Miller was living at the assisted living facility and Escalante was an employee. Miller called 911 around 5:15 p.m. to report that he shot his “care taker.” Officers responded and contacted Miller outside of the residence. Officers found Escalante who was already deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.
At the sentencing hearing, Judge Saxby heard a victim impact statement from Escalante’s wife, Belma Escalante. Ms. Escalante flew to Anchorage from the Philippines for today’s hearing. Judge Saxby accepted the sentence agreement. Judge Saxby explained that it was necessary to confine Miller to protect the public and he noted that Miller’s act “shattered” Escalante’s family. Judge Saxby noted the community’s outrage about Miller’s conduct.
