Department of Law Statement on Alaska Supreme Court Decision on House District 1 Race

(Anchorage, AK)—Today, the Alaska Supreme Court affirmed the Division of Elections recount of the House District 1 race between Kathryn Dodge and Bart LeBon where the division certified Bart LeBon had won the race.

“This brings finality to the elections process and affirms that the Division of Elections acted properly in the recount,” said Chief Assistant Attorney General Margaret Paton-Walsh. “The division is committed to implementing the State’s elections statutes consistent with the intent of the legislature and to best effectuate the will of the voters.”

Attorney General Kevin G. Clarkson congratulated the department’s attorneys on defending the division. With the legislative session fast approaching, this prompt decision by the Court will help the legislature, particularly the House of Representatives, move forward in preparing for session. Attorney General Clarkson said, “I’m pleased that the court acted quickly to resolve this dispute so that the incoming legislature can focus on fulfilling their duties to the people of Alaska.”
