Job description
The Torts, Workers’ Compensation & Corrections section is recruiting for a full-time attorney to represent the Department of Corrections and its employees in civil matters filed by prisoners. These cases include petitions for post-conviction relief involving the Alaska Board of Parole; time accounting claims; administrative appeals of institutional disciplinary decisions to the Superior Court; defending Department employees named as defendants in civil rights lawsuits; and agency advice. The attorney’s duties incorporate all aspects of civil litigation defense in both state and federal courts, including investigation, discovery, dispositive motion practice, evidentiary hearings, and trial and appellate work. Some travel may be required. Flexible schedules and hybrid work from home arrangements may be available.

Qualifications
Qualified applicants must have excellent communication, oral advocacy, writing, and time management skills. The ability to handle a high volume of cases in a fast-paced work environment is essential. They should enjoy all aspects of the litigation process including trial. Applicants should be highly motivated and able to work well and collaborate as a member of a litigation team. Prior criminal law experience as either a prosecutor or defense attorney is desirable, but not required. Applicants at all experience levels will be considered.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
