Job description
The Labor and State Affairs section is recruiting for a full-time attorney. The section provides legal advice and representation to state agencies in multiple areas of law, including elections, campaign finance, employment, labor relations, civil rights, separation of powers, boards and commissions, procurement, unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation, and workplace safety. The section’s client agencies are the Departments of Administration, Labor and Workforce Development, Military and Veterans Affairs; and to the Offices of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Division of Elections, Division of Motor Vehicles, Alaska Public Offices Commission, and the Alaska State Commission on Human Rights.
The attorney selected for this position will primarily advise and represent the Department of Labor and the Department of Administration on labor and employment matters including wrongful termination, retirement and benefits, family medical leave, and accessibility. The work will focus on litigation and include agency advice. Applicants must be able to handle all phases of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, trials, and appeals, as well as arbitration and other administrative proceedings. This attorney will have a high degree of autonomy in a collaborative and growing section and may also contribute to the other agencies and areas of law that the section handles.

Qualifications
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in the state of Alaska now or within 10 months of their appointment to this position. Applicants with three or more years of civil ligation experience and knowledge of labor and employment law are preferred. Applicants must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise excellent judgment, build strong client relationships, and manage competing deadlines.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
