Public Meeting Dates Announced on EVOS Reopener

(ANCHORAGE) - Attorney General David W. Márquez announced today that two additional public meeting dates have been set for state and federal officials to discuss the criteria for the "reopener" clause of the 1991 Exxon Valdez oil spill settlement agreement and to obtain public input on natural resource injuries and ideas for restoration projects.
Meeting locations and times have been confirmed for the following dates:

Under the "reopener" clause the state and federal governments can, prior to September 1, 2006, request Exxon to pay up to $100 million for specific restoration projects for injuries to populations, habitat or species that could not reasonably have been known or anticipated at the time the 1991 settlement agreement was signed.
Attorney General David W. Márquez, Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Kurt Fredriksson, and Alaska Department of Fish and Game Commissioner McKie Campbell, as well as federal representatives, will participate in these public meetings.
The agenda for these meetings will include:
- Introduction: Statement of purpose of the meeting
- Reopener criteria
- Current status of natural resource injuries
- Discussion: How the public can participate
- Other options for funding restoration projects
- Listen to comments from the community
