Press Release
Anchorage Man Convicted of Attempted Sexual Assault
January 18, 2013
On January 17, 2013, 57 year-old registered sex offender John Charlie of Anchorage was convicted of Attempted Sexual Assault in the Second Degree.
Following a two week jury trial, John Charlie was convicted of attempting to sexually assault an intoxicated woman who lay passed-out outside Bean’s Café in June 2011. Charlie was caught in the act by a passer-by and volunteers from the Brother Francis Shelter. Anchorage Police, led by Detective John Vandervalk, investigated the crime.
Superior Court Judge Philip Volland scheduled Charlie’s sentencing for April 26, 2013. Charlie faces a sentence range of 8 to 15 years. The jury also found that the victim was particularly vulnerable due to homelessness and alcohol use and that Charlie had previously committed a prior sexual offense of a similar nature.
