Press Release
Anchorage Man Convicted of Sexual Assault of Incapacitated Woman
October 16, 2013
On April 22, 2013, 51 year-old Gary Martin of Anchorage was convicted of Sexual Assault in the Second Degree.
Following a two week jury trial, Gary Martin was convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman who lay passed out in a vacant lot in August 2011. An uninvolved Good Samaritan observed suspicious behavior from the window of a nearby office building and called 911 to report the sexual assault-in-progress. Without her phone call, it is likely that the crime would have gone unreported.
The Anchorage Police Special Assaults Unit investigated the crime. The victim, who has since passed away, was unavailable to testify. Her parents were present throughout much of the trial.
Superior Court Judge Michael Wolverton scheduled Martin’s sentencing for July 26, 2013. Martin faces a sentence range of 5 to 15 years.
