Jury Convicts Anchorage Man for New Year's Eve Sex with Teenager

On March 19, 2014, an Anchorage jury found 21-year-old Char Haire guilty of six counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. Haire was convicted for sexually penetrating a 14-year-old on January 1, 2013 at a party in downtown Anchorage. The 14-year-old became intoxicated with a group of teenaged friends. She told Haire that she was only 14 years old. Haire engaged in sexual acts with her anyway, including vaginal and anal intercourse and oral penetration.

The victim reported that she passed out and did not remember many details until she arrived home the next day. When she arrived home, she realized she had suffered injuries to her genitals. She told her parents what she remembered about the previous evening and they reported it to the Anchorage Police.

The Anchorage Police Crimes against Children Unit, in conjunction with Alaska Cares, conducted a forensic interview with the victim. The investigation led to the discovery of DNA evidence which corroborated that the crime occurred.

The jury returned its guilty verdicts on Wednesday morning after hearing closing arguments on Tuesday morning. The court scheduled Haire’s sentencing for August 1, 2014. Haire faces a sentencing range of five to 15 years and will have to register as a sex offender for 15 years.
