Press Release
Anchorage Man Sentenced for Assault with Metal Rod
April 11, 2014
On Friday, April 11, 2014, 42 year old Dewayne Katongan was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Anchorage Superior Court. Katongan was convicted by a jury in December 2013. Katongan assaulted another man in July 2013 with a metal rod by striking him multiple times in the head.
Katongan faced a potential sentence of six to 10 years in prison as a result of the conviction. Katongan has been previously convicted of four felony offenses, 36 misdemeanor offenses, and fourteen probation revocations in 33 different cases. Katongan had been released from felony probation for less than two months when he committed his most recent assault.
Superior Court Judge Kevin Saxby agreed with the recommendation of the prosecutor to sentence Katongan as a “worst offender” based on his criminal history. Saxby also found that “past behavior is the best indicator” of future conduct and that there was little else that could be done to assist Katongan in his rehabilitation. Katongon acknowledged full responsibility for his conduct and told Saxby that he was “getting tired” of his lifestyle.
