Press Release
Jury Convicts Man for Shooting Mountain View Resident from His Vehicle
September 12, 2014
On September 29, 2013, then 22 year old Keng Her was assisting a friend who was involved in a single vehicle collision in a Mountain View alleyway. Following the collision, the evidence at trial showed that a resident from a nearby home confronted Her and his friend (the driver of the crashed vehicle) and told them to wait for the police to arrive. Her and a neighborhood resident got into a verbal argument when Her and his friend attempted to leave the area before police arrived. This argument turned physical when Her attempted to punch the resident.
Her and the driver of the crashed vehicle then got into Her’s SUV and drove away down the alley. Keng Her drove a short distance, and then turned his vehicle around. He then drove his SUV back towards the scene of the crash. As Her drove past, he began firing approximately six rounds from his 9 mm handgun striking the neighborhood resident in the foot and lower back with two bullets. The resident was treated and released for his injuries. Her then drove away from the scene before police responded.
On September 12, 2014, following a two week trial, an Anchorage jury convicted Her of assault in the first, second, and third degrees as well as misconduct involving a weapon in the first degree.
The court scheduled sentencing for December 11, 2014. Her faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Her had been released on bail pending trial. As a result of his conviction, Her was returned to prison.
Her’s friend previously pled guilty to the crimes of reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
