Judge Sentences Anchorage Man to 52 Years for 2013 Violent Crime Spree
July 17, 2015
(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – Yesterday, Judge Phillip Volland sentenced 27 year old Alejandro Aulman of Anchorage to spend the next 52 years in prison for a 2013 crime spree involving home invasion robberies, assaults, burglaries, and commercial robberies of area businesses. The sentence came following Aulman’s guilty pleas to two counts of assault in the first degree, one count of assault in the second degree, and one count of robbery in the first degree.
It was shown at trial that in January 2013, Aulman knocked on the door of a residence belonging to an 80 year old man. Aulman told the man that his car had broken down and he needed to use his telephone. When Aulman was handed the phone, he pistol whipped the man in the head causing the man to fall into a coma and a depressed skull fracture. The man also suffered permanent vertigo. Aulman then stole a pistol and two dollars from the man while leaving him unconscious in a puddle of blood.
Aulman then used the pistol he had stolen to commit or attempt to commit a series of robberies in Anchorage at several businesses over the following two weeks in early January 2013.
On January 15, 2013, Aulman knocked on the door of a residence belonging to a 65 year old woman. Aulman told the woman he needed to use her telephone because his car had broken down. When she gave Aulman her phone, he hit her in the face with the pistol he had stolen two weeks earlier. Aulman then went through the woman’s purse. He became angry because she only had 20 dollars so he continued to beat her in the face with the pistol, breaking her jaw, orbital ridge, and causing multiple skull and facial fractures as well as brain trauma that resulted in the loss of vision in her right eye.
After this robbery assault, Aulman picked up and attempted to rob another woman, shooting her in the hand with the pistol he had stolen. He then kicked this victim out of his vehicle into the middle of the street. Anchorage Police promptly tracked Aulman to his home, and recovered the stolen firearm.
At sentencing, Judge Volland stated that Aulman, who had two prior felony convictions for residential burglary and robbery, demonstrated an “uncontrolled and inexplicable disposition to violence” over the course of his adult life. In recognizing that the 52 year sentence imposed by the court for these offenses is longer than some sentences imposed in homicide cases, Judge Volland stated that Aulman’s crimes “demonstrate a distinctly different and unusual need to keep [Aulman] incarcerated for a long period of time to keep the community safe, because I remain concerned and convinced that if released too early he would terrorize a large swath of the community as he did with this string of offenses.”
