Press Release
Anchorage Man Convicted of Attempted Murder
November 4, 2015
An Anchorage jury today found 23 year old Oscar Fabela Villa II guilty of attempted murder in the first degree. The verdict followed a six day trial before retired Alaska Supreme Court Justice Warren Matthews. The jury also returned guilty verdicts on charges of misconduct involving weapons and two counts of assault in the third degree.
Testimony at trial indicated that in June 2014, Villa was placed in a halfway house as a condition of bail on unrelated criminal charges. Villa absconded from the halfway house and got in touch with his sister and her boyfriend. On June 29, the boyfriend spoke with Villa over the phone and threatened to contact the police about disputed debit card charges. He testified that Villa threatened to "put a bullet in" him if he did so. That evening, Villa went to the boyfriend's apartment and tried to talk him into coming outside. When he refused to do so, Villa fired three rounds into the window where he had been standing during the conversation. Neither the boyfriend nor a second occupant of the apartment was injured.
Anchorage Police responded to the crime scene and recovered bullet fragments, which were analyzed by the State Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory. Villa remained at large until October 2014, when he was apprehended by the Anchorage Police Department.
Attempted murder in the first degree is an unclassified felony with a sentencing range of 5-99 years. Villa has been remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections without bail pending sentencing, which Justice Matthews scheduled for March 22, 2016.
