Anchorage Man Sentenced for Weapons Misconduct and Driving Under the Influence
March 7, 2016
On March 7, 2016, Anchorage Superior Court Judge Paul Olson sentenced 33 year old Kevin Glover to a maximum of five years in prison for being a felon in possession of a handgun, and seven months on additional charges. In June 2015, an Anchorage jury found Mr. Glover guilty of being a felon in possession of a handgun, driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license, and possessing a firearm while impaired.
The case began on the morning of February 22, 2015, when officers with the Anchorage Police Department responded to reports of a man slumped over the wheel near the intersection of Nunaka Drive and Miley Drive in Anchorage. Officers saw Mr. Glover passed out in the driver’s seat with the engine running. Mr. Glover was the only person in the car. The vehicle had hit a bus stop sign and was resting on a lawn. Officers saw drug paraphernalia in his lap and other paraphernalia on the driver’s seat.
After several minutes, the officers were able to wake Mr. Glover. Mr. Glover had poor balance and appeared sluggish and disoriented. The officers conducted a pat search, where they found a handgun and several bullets on him. Subsequent testing of Mr. Glover’s blood showed the presence of methamphetamine and marijuana in his system. Mr. Glover’s driver’s license had been previously revoked.
At the sentencing, the court found that Mr. Glover was a worst offender, authorizing a maximum sentence on the felon in possession charge. The court based this finding on Mr. Glover’s extensive criminal history, which includes prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a handgun, driving under the influence, sexual assault, felony assault, and felony eluding police officers. The court stated that isolation was the primary sentencing goal due to the need to protect the public from Mr. Glover.
