Anchorage Man Pleads Guilty for 2013 Shooting Death

(Anchorage, AK) – Seventy-six year old Johnnie Jones pled guilty today to manslaughter for causing the death of 36 year old Sean Mulgrew in October 2013.
On Sunday, October 22, 2013, shortly after 3:30 a.m., a witness reported hearing gunshots and then saw two men man running out of an apartment building off of Ingra Street. One man left in a vehicle and the second ran eastbound through an alley.
Following the initial reports, officers from the Anchorage Police Department responded and found Sean Mulgrew in the alley. He was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers found a blood trail through the alley that led them inside an apartment building where they found then 73 year old Johnnie Jones wiping fresh blood off of the main door of apartment building.
Officers observed blood spots on Jones’ shorts and two .380 shell casings in the entryway. Jones was taken to the Anchorage Police Department and provided a statement to homicide detectives. Jones admitted to being in altercation with someone who came to his door but denied shooting anyone and denied any knowledge about why someone would come to his apartment.
The Anchorage Police executed a search warrant in the common area near Jones’ apartment and found .380 caliber semiautomatic pistol and a .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol. Officers also found heroin and cocaine as well as digital scales.
The Anchorage Police were unable to identify the second suspect from the incident.
Superior Court Judge Jack Smith accepted Jones’ guilty plea and scheduled sentencing for February 10, 2017 in Anchorage. Jones faces a sentencing range of 12 to 20 years in prison. Jones has been in custody since his arrest in 2013 and is not eligible for bail pending sentencing.
