May 26, 2017
(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) Yesterday, an Anchorage jury found 36 year old Michael Carl guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in 2013. The jury found Carl guilty of sexual assault in the second and third degree after an eight day trial.
On June 27, 2013, the Anchorage Police Department responded to a 911 call on Penland Parkway involving a large disturbance outside of a trailer. A witness told the responding officers that Michael Carl “raped the handicapped girl.” The investigation revealed that the victim, although 23 years old at the time of the sexual assault, had been born with Down’s Syndrome.
Superior Court Judge Michael Wolverton presided over the trial and scheduled sentencing for August 25, 2017. Carl faces a sentence range of five to 15 years in prison. Carl will remain in the custody of the Department of Corrections until the sentencing hearing.
