Frank Nunooruk Convicted of 2015 Sexual Assault

(Anchorage, AK) – Yesterday, an Anchorage jury found 57 year old Frank Nunooruk guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in November 2014. Nunooruk was found not guilty of sexually assaulting a different woman in December 2013. The jury found Nunooruk guilty of sexual assault in the first degree, an unclassified felony but found him not guilty of sexual assault in the second degree, a class B felony.

Prosecutors James Klugman and Reid Schweitzer presented evidence at trial which showed that Nunooruk invited a homeless woman to spend the night with him in an Anchorage motel in November 2014. The woman fell asleep in the room only to find Nunooruk on top of her, holding her down with one hand and putting his hand over her mouth with the other. They also presented evidence that Nunooruk’s DNA was detected on the woman.

Superior Court Judge Jack Smith presided over the eight day trial and scheduled sentencing for October 16, 2017. Nunooruk has 30 prior criminal convictions in the State of Alaska, dating back to 1977, including a prior sexual assault conviction. Nunooruk faces a presumptive sentence of 40 to 60 years in prison.
