Bernard Jack Sentenced for Sixth Felony DUI Offense

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) Today, Superior Court Judge Michael Corey sentenced 41 year old Bernard Jack to serve five years in prison for his sixth felony driving under the influence (DUI) conviction. Jack previously pled no contest to the charges on September 9, 2016.

On May 9, 2016, at 9:20 p.m., Anchorage Police Officers responded to a Report Every Dangerous Driver (REDDI) complaint regarding a vehicle that had been weaving all over the road and hit the curb several times in a residential neighborhood near Boniface Parkway and the Glenn Highway. Officers found the vehicle parked at an angle across a driveway. The driver, identified as Jack, was asleep inside the vehicle with the engine running and the music playing loudly. Jack performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests and provided a breath sample at 10:30 p.m. which measured .258 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath. Jack’s driver’s license had been revoked as a result of his prior convictions for driving under the influence in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2011, and 2012.

Assistant District Attorney Bonnie Bull asked Judge Corey to sentence Jack to the statutory maximum of five years. Judge Corey agreed with the prosecutor and imposed a maximum sentence of five years. Judge Corey found that four aggravating factors applied. Judge Corey described Jack as a worst offender who is extraordinarily dangerous to the community. He found that Jack had zero prospects for rehabilitation.

Jack has been in the custody of the Department of Corrections since his arrest on May 9, 2016. Judge Corey also extended Jack’s probation from a prior DUI conviction for an additional three years.
