Assistant District Attorney
Office: Juneau District Attorney's Office
Location: Juneau
Job Description
The Juneau District Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly-motivated, energetic attorney to prosecute cases in the capital city where we are filling a full-time assistant district attorney position. Applicants should have strong oral advocacy skills. Prior prosecutorial experience is a plus, but it is not required. This position requires the ability to think critically and reason logically; the ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; the ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively in a deadline-controlled atmosphere; and the ability to manage numerous matters simultaneously.
The Juneau office consists of 4 attorneys and 5 staff with a satellite office in Sitka consisting of 1 attorney and 2 staff. We prosecute violations of criminal law, sharing the responsibility for prosecuting misdemeanor crimes committed in the City and Borough of Juneau with the city prosecutor’s office. The prosecution of state cases requires frequent trials, pre-trial motion practice, weekly grand jury presentations, daily court hearings, and some post-conviction and appellate work. In addition to the single district and three superior court judges in Juneau, this office also covers the Haines, Hoonah, Skagway, Wrangell, and Yakutat courts and offers occasional opportunity to travel to these locations.
Juneau is a small but modern community with about 32,000 people in the greater Juneau region. We have some large stores (Fred Meyer, Safeway, Home Depot, and Costco) in addition to many local stores with the Southeast Alaska flair. We have an active arts community, movie theaters, several gyms, and an international airport with multiple daily flights direct to Anchorage and to Seattle, a major hub for accessing the “Lower 48.”
Juneau’s incredible scenery is framed by glaciers, mountains, and island-studded waters facing the Pacific Ocean. Juneau has a temperate, oceanic climate and is home to Alaska’s largest national forest, the Tongass National Forest. If you enjoy dramatic scenery, outdoor activities, and abundant wildlife, then Juneau is the place for you. The physical office itself boasts stunning views of the mountains and Gastineau Channel. Mendenhall Glacier is a fifteen-minute drive from downtown Juneau while Mount Roberts is accessible from downtown, via both trails and a tramway. Hiking, hunting, fishing, whale watching, camping, and paddling are favorite summer activities while winter comes with the promise of opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, aurora gazing, ice climbing, and snow machining.
