Job description

Do you have a passion for drafting good law? If so, you should pursue a career with the Department of Law in the Legislation, Regulations, and Legislative Research Section! This job affords an attorney the opportunity to be part of the dynamic team that is responsible for drafting the Governor’s legislative agenda, working with the Office of Management and Budget on fiscal matters, and testifying before the legislature on legal questions related to legislation. Attorneys on this team also advise the Lt. Governor on all regulatory matters and review and approve proposed regulations for all State agencies. In a nutshell, attorneys in this section are the “go to” team for drafting the statutes and regulations that address matters of statewide importance and significance.
Attorneys in the Civil Division work on matters of statewide importance, all while living and enjoying all Alaska has to offer. If you enjoy complex and impactful legal work along with dramatic scenery, outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, kayaking, and abundant wildlife, then the Alaska Department of Law, Civil Division is the place for you. Flexible schedules, including hybrid telework arrangements, may be available.

Qualifications
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school. It is preferred that applicants have a minimum of five years of licensed practice. Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment is essential. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional writing and analytical skills, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to offer solution-oriented options for complex issues.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
