Living & Working in Fairbanks
Fairbanks is in the central Tanana Valley, straddling the Chena River near its confluence with the Tanana River. Fairbanks is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, with its large campus and course offerings. There are two military bases in the vicinity that add to our diverse population. Fairbanks is the largest city in the Interior of Alaska and the third largest in the state with a population of around 100,000. Athabascan peoples have used the area for thousands of years, although there is no known permanent Alaska Native settlement at the site of Fairbanks.
Fairbanks has many similar shopping options as the "Lower 48" and numerous entertainment and dining options. You can get to Fairbanks by driving the Alaska Highway, taking the train from Anchorage, or flying via the International airport where there are daily flights to many locations in the contiguous U.S.. There are many outdoor opportunities here both in the summer (hiking trails, fishing, 2.5 hours from Denali National Park) and winter (snow machining and cross-country skiing reigns supreme). Denali National Park is 125 miles away where you can see some of the most majestic scenery and wildlife anywhere in the world. Fairbanks is also known for its northern lights viewing when the temperatures are cold and the skies are clear. Fairbanks has long, cold winters and short hot summers.
