Job description
The Labor and State Affairs section is recruiting for a full-time attorney. The section provides legal assistance needed for governmental management, including employment law, labor relations, civil rights, separation of powers, boards and commissions, procurement, unemployment benefits, workers' compensation, and OSHA. The section provides legal assistance on issues associated with the conduct of elections, campaign finance, disaster management, and homeland security. The section provides legal services to the Departments of Administration, Labor and Workforce Development, Military and Veterans Affairs; and to the Offices of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Division of Elections, Division of Motor Vehicles, Alaska Public Offices Commission, and the Alaska State Commission on Human Rights.
This position offers a good balance of litigation (about 50%) and agency advice (about 50%) and provides exposure to the core areas of attorneys working in the public service, including legislation, regulations, public records, open meetings, and assisting governmental agencies grappling with timely and interesting issues. The attorney selected for this position will primarily represent and advise the Department of Labor and the Department of Administration on labor and employment matters. Additionally, the attorney will help with a range of other matters, such as procurement, wage and hour, unemployment benefits appeals, and unemployment security tax matters.

Qualifications
Prior professional or legal experience, including a clerkship with the state or federal courts, is preferred is not required. Applicants must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision, have excellent judgment and strong client relation skills, and need to be able to manage competing deadlines at once. Applicants should enjoy being part of a team environment and be comfortable with and interested in handling all phases of administrative litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and appeals. The successful applicant must possess superior analytical skills and excellent writing ability and be willing to draft, edit, and testify on legislation.

Estimated Compensation
The table below gives an estimate of compensation based on a combination of judicial clerking and licensed legal experience. The compensation listed in the table represents the base pay. Several locations around Alaska have geographical pay differences. Upon a job offer, you would receive a firm salary quote based on location of position and qualifying experience. Attorneys are eligible to promote from Attorney 1 through 4 with service and acceptable job performance.
